What am I preventing by using Pre-Emergent?

This time of year is so important for preparing your lawn for spring. Application of pre-emergent can prepare your lawn for a weed free spring! Prepare now, prevent later! What are you actually preventing when using pre-emergent? Listed below are just a few pesky weeds that like to pop up when preventative care isn't given to your lawn.

Crabgrass is a spring weed that could be prevented with pre-emergent. It is a warm-season annual that reproduces by seed. It germinates, lives and dies all in the same year. Just because you can’t see Crabgrass during some seasons, doesn’t mean that it isn’t there. There could be hundreds of thousands of seeds potentially waiting to shoot up! This is why pre-emergent is so important.
Poa Annua is one of the most common grassy weeds in the United States. It is very similar to Kentucky Bluegrass, but it has a shallower root system and develops a short seed head early in the season. Most want to treat it to make it go away, but it will actually die off in the summer when the weather gets hot. If you want to treat Poa Annua it needs to happen with a pre-emergent.

Goosegrass is normally found in highly trafficked areas that contain compacted soil and poor turf grass cover. It is identified by its white, flattened stem and a seeded that usually contains 2-5 rows of seeds. Goosegrass is very similar to crabgrass. It should also be prevented by pre-emergent application!
Want to prevent all of these weeds from popping up this spring? Give us a call! We are here to answer any of your questions about preventative care!
