White Clover
What is White Clover?
White clover is a common perennial weed found in South Carolina lawns and landscapes. It thrives in cool, moist conditions and can grow in both sun and partial shade. White clover forms a low-growing, creeping mat that can spread rapidly through stolons (above-ground runners). The plant features distinctive trifoliate leaves, often with a white crescent-shaped mark. In late spring through summer, it produces spherical white flower heads that are attractive to bees and other pollinators. While some consider white clover beneficial for its nitrogen-fixing properties, others view it as an unwanted weed in manicured lawns.
Controlling White Clover:
There are four ways to control White Clover. We will break down the 4 ways with pros and cons of each control method.
- Hand-pulling: This method can be effective for small infestations. However, white clover has a extensive root system and spreads through stolons, making complete removal challenging. It can be time-consuming and may require repeated efforts.
- Proper lawn care: Maintaining a healthy, dense lawn through proper mowing, fertilization, and irrigation can help prevent white clover infestations. Raising the mowing height can shade out clover. While these practices improve overall lawn health, they may not completely eliminate existing clover.
- Spraying with post-emergent herbicides: Selective broadleaf herbicides can effectively control white clover. However, this method only treats existing plants and doesn't prevent new growth. Multiple applications may be necessary for complete control.
- Soil management: White clover often thrives in soils with low nitrogen levels. Proper fertilization can help grass outcompete clover. At Turf Boss, we provide expert soil testing and fertilization services to create an environment that favors grass over clover.
