What is Henbit?
Henbit is a winter annual weed common in South Carolina. It typically germinates in fall and grows through winter and early spring. Henbit prefers moist, fertile soils and can thrive in both sunny and partially shaded areas. It forms low-growing mats that can reach up to 12 inches tall. The plant has distinctive square stems and rounded, scalloped leaves that clasp the stem. In late winter to early spring, henbit produces small, tubular purple flowers that grow in whorls near the top of the stems.

- Hand-pulling: This method can be effective for small infestations, especially when the soil is moist. Henbit has a shallow root system, making it relatively easy to pull. However, this can be time-consuming for large areas and may not prevent regrowth from seeds left in the soil.
