What is Dogfennel?

Dogfennel is a native perennial weed common in South Carolina. It thrives in full sun and can tolerate various soil conditions. Dogfennel starts as a rosette of finely divided leaves in spring, then develops into a tall, bushy plant. It can grow up to 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide. During late summer and fall, it produces clusters of small white flowers at the top of the stems.

Controlling Dogfennel Growth:

There are four ways to control Dogfennel. We will break down the 4 ways with pros and cons of each control method.
  1. Pulling or digging: This method can be effective for small infestations. However, Dogfennel has a deep taproot, making it challenging to remove entirely. If the root is not completely removed, the plant can regrow. This method can be time-consuming and labor-intensive, especially for large areas.
  2. Mowing: Regular mowing can help control Dogfennel by preventing seed production. However, this method alone will not eliminate established plants, as they can regrow from the roots. Mowing is most effective when combined with other control methods.
  3. Spraying with post-emergent herbicides: Selective herbicides can be effective in controlling Dogfennel. However, this method only treats existing plants and does not prevent new growth. Care must be taken to avoid damaging desirable plants nearby.
  4. Spraying with pre-emergent herbicides: This is the most effective method for preventing Dogfennel growth. Applying pre-emergent herbicides at the right time can stop seeds from germinating. At Turf Boss, we provide expert pre-emergent care for Dogfennel and many other weeds. The best time to apply pre-emergent for Dogfennel is in early spring before seeds germinate.
