Dallisgrass
What is a Dallisgrass?
Dallisgrass are invasive fast growing wavey grassy weed that can quickly take over a yard. Dallisgrass is related to and looks very similar to crabgrass. Dallisgrass starts as a small patch of dark green grass. Dallisgrass will germinates and grows throughout the warm summer months. Dallisgrass is dense and can quickly take over a yard. Dallisgrass grows long and fast standing in clumps above your beautiful grassy lawn making your lawn unsightly.
Controlling Dallisgrass Growth:
There are four ways to control Dallisgrass. We will breakdown the 4 ways with pros and cons of each control method.
1. Pulling or Digging: It takes a fair amount of work to pull or dig up Dallisgrass, especially when the nodes have created roots. The biggest concern is that you have to get the entire root for them not to come back. The second concern is getting Dallisgrass removed before it creates nodes that then root in to create more Dallisgrass patches. This can be time consuming, back breaking, and exhausting. This method will also not prevent the weeds from coming back, but get rid of them after they are have already been established.
2. Spraying with organic herbicides: Clove oil and vinegar spray are both natural organic ways to kill Dallisgrass. While this method does work it is about repetition. You must treat everyday, and retreat until the Dallisgrass is dead. This method will not prevent the weeds from coming back, only treat them after they have come up.
3. Spraying with post emergent: You can spray Dallisgrass with post emergent, such as round up. Again this will not prevent the weeds from coming back, only treat them after they have come up. Another con is this could kill the grass area right around the weed if any post emergent that is not turf friendly is used.
4. Spraying with pre-emergent: This is by far the best method for controlling Dallisgrass. Spraying pre-emergents at the correct time of year will prevent Dallisgrass from growing and becoming a problem. Dallisgrass pre-emergent is best completed in Fall or early Spring. When on a proper year around fertilization and weed control program is used it is very unlikely that you will have any problems with Dallisgrass. Dallisgrass can't thrive in well fertilized, well watered, and well managed yards. At Turf Boss you will get the best pre-emergent care for Crabgrass as well as many other kinds of weeds.
