What is American Burnweed?

American burnweed is an annual plant native to North America, including South Carolina. It gets its name from its tendency to quickly colonize areas after fires or other disturbances. This weed thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils. American burnweed can grow rapidly, reaching heights of 1 to 6 feet tall. It has alternate, lance-shaped leaves with toothed edges. In late summer to fall, it produces small, cylindrical flower heads with white to pale pink florets, followed by fluffy white seed heads that aid in wind dispersal.

Controlling American Burnweed:

There are four ways to control American Burnweed. We will break down the 4 ways with pros and cons of each control method.
  1. Hand-pulling: This method can be effective for small infestations, especially when the soil is moist. American burnweed has a shallow root system, making it relatively easy to pull. However, this can be time-consuming for large areas and may not prevent regrowth from seeds left in the soil.
  2. Mowing: Regular mowing can help control American burnweed by preventing seed production. However, this method alone may not eliminate established plants, as they can regrow from the base.
  3. Spraying with post-emergent herbicides: Selective herbicides can effectively control American burnweed, especially when applied to young plants. However, this method only treats existing plants and doesn't prevent new growth. Care must be taken to avoid damaging desirable plants.
  4. Prevention through landscape management: Maintaining a healthy, dense lawn or landscape can help prevent American burnweed from establishing. Minimizing soil disturbance and quickly replanting bare areas can reduce opportunities for this weed to colonize.

At Turf Boss, we offer comprehensive weed management services that address American burnweed and many other invasive plants. Our expert team can develop a customized plan to keep your lawn and landscape healthy and weed-free.
